The flight crew in HEMS aviation consists of a pilot and a HEMS Crew Member (HCM). The pilot is the captain of the aircraft. The HCM acts as an assistant during the flight. The assistant navigates to the destination and monitors the helicopter, the pilot’s actions, and the surrounding environment. An exception is the Rovaniemi unit, whose flight crew consists of two pilots: the captain and the co-pilot.

Aviation regulations and flight operation manuals lay the foundation for our flight operations. Finland’s unpredictable weather, including winter and freezing flight conditions, pose specific challenges for aviation. This requires the crew to be capable of operating in demanding conditions, continuous training for flight personnel, and ongoing development of flight methods. FinnHEMS’s flight operations organisation is responsible for ensuring the airworthiness of helicopters. We carry out some of our maintenance activities independently, and some are outsourced. The helicopters are carefully serviced to maintain their readiness and safety at all times.
