Helicopter Emergency Medical Services in Finland
In the southern area, flight operations are carried out by Skärgårdshavets Helikoptertjänst Ab (SHT), a company specializing in HEMS and air ambulance operations. SHT belongs to the Åland-based Wiklöf Holding Ab group.
SHT began its operations in 1990 in Åland. It has operated HEMS flights in Turku since 2000 and in Vantaa since 2001.
At present, the SHT fleet comprises Eurocopter EC135 P2 Single Pilot IFR helicopters. The current fleet has proven to be very reliable. Over the past three years, the success rate of helicopter availability has been over 98 per cent. In addition to other advantages, the EC135 has a low noise level. SHT began using night vision goggles (NVG) in 2011. Night vision systems enable pilots, for example, to better ensure the safety of landing sites.

In the northern area, flight operations are carried out by Babcock Scandinavian AirAmbulance AB, which is part of Babcock SAA FW AB. Babcock SAA belongs to the global Babcock-corporation. Babcock SAA FW AB is one of the largest airplane and helicopter ambulance companies in the Nordic countries. It has helicopter ambulance bases, of which three in Finland and airplane ambulance bases.
In february 2015, Babcock Scandinavian AirAmbulance AB became the first flight operator in the world to operate HEMS-flights with a modern EC145T2-fleet. The performance and equipment of the fleet are among the most advanced in the world.

Babcock SAA FW AB has a flight safety programme. The programme comprises of instruments for flight safety such as reports on deviations, operational risk management (change management) and an yearly flight safety plan.
