Helicopter Emergency Medical Services in Finland

THE HEMS -unit is dispatched trough the Emergency Response Centre.

HEMS -unit dispatch criteria

The FinnHEMS HEMS -unit is dispatched trough the Emergency Response Centre (ERC). The deputy chief physician (EMS) in cooperation with the lead physician of the unit instruct the ERC:s regarding situations in which the HEMS-unit shall be dispatched.

The ERC-operator evaluates the need for assistance and dispatches the HEMS -unit. Also paramedics already at the scene of emergency can dispatch the HEMS-unit, if the state of the patient requires.

Most missions involve an accident or a failure of basic vital functions: patients are unconscious or lifeless or have breathing difficulties. The criteria vary somewhat from one hospital district to another due to variations of treatment possibilities in ambulances, response times and geographical circumstances.
